CSDPrint was absolutely delighted to be asked by sustainable transport charity Sustrans to support the design and implementation of new signage at one of Yorkshire’s best-loved visitor attractions – Temple Newsam.
This project was especially exciting for us, as it focused on helping to make a beautiful outdoor space like the Temple Newsam estate more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
The work forms part of Sustrans’ wider initiative to create a fully accessible route in Leeds, connecting Temple Newsam to Rothwell. The new pathway is designed for walkers, cyclists, wheelchair and mobility scooter users and families with buggies, and will ultimately link into the National Cycle Network – a UK-wide series of signed paths.
Sustrans asked CSDPrint to assist with the design, production and installation of wayfinding and graphic signage at three key locations within the Temple Newsam estate.
The signage needed to be manufactured using durable, weatherproof materials, in full compliance with Temple Newsam’s brand guidelines, and installed in precisely identified locations to ensure visibility and safety.
Although we’ve worked at Temple Newsam several times before, this was one of our most interesting and complex projects to date.
The new path crosses the 1,000-acre estate of parkland and woods, visited by walkers, cyclists, and families, it also hosts large-scale events and festivals. This meant the signage had to work seamlessly for a variety of users, while being robust enough to withstand both environmental and logistical challenges.
As is often the case, the key to success was in the planning. Our installation team conducted detailed site surveys to ensure that:
• Signage locations were clear of underground utilities,
• Positions avoided overhanging trees, and
• Signs wouldn’t obstruct large vehicles that use the estate routes during events.
The result was signage that is both visually appealing and highly functional — enhancing the user experience while maintaining the character of the estate.
